Movie Review: Raazi (2018) – A Gripping Spy Thriller with Heart

 INTRODUCTION

Bollywood has produced many patriotic films, but Raazi (2018) stands out for its subtle, emotionally charged, and realistic approach to espionage. Directed by Meghna Gulzar and based on the book Calling Sehmat by Harinder Sikka, this film is a true story-inspired spy thriller set against the backdrop of the 1971 India-Pakistan war.

With Alia Bhatt in the lead role, Raazi is not just about espionage—it’s a tale of duty, sacrifice, and patriotism with a human touch. But does it deliver as a thrilling spy drama? Let’s find out.

PLOT SUMMARY

Set in 1971, just before the Indo-Pak war, Raazi follows Sehmat Khan (Alia Bhatt), a young Kashmiri girl who is trained as an Indian spy. She is married off to a Pakistani military officer, Iqbal Syed (Vicky Kaushal), so she can secretly gather intelligence for India.

As she infiltrates the enemy’s home, Sehmat finds herself emotionally torn—between her love for her country and the bonds she forms with her new family. With danger at every step, she must stay undetected while delivering crucial information that could alter the course of the war.

Will Sehmat succeed in her mission, or will her double life put her in danger?

WHAT MAKES RAAZI STAND OUT?

1. Alia Bhatt’s Career-Defining Performance

Despite being a nepo kid,Alia Bhatt delivers an extraordinary performance, carrying the film with her dedicated portrayal of Sehmat. She transitions effortlessly from a vulnerable young girl to a hardened spy, making every scene feel intense and real.

2. Realistic Spy Thriller (No Over-the-Top Action)

Unlike Bollywood’s usual larger-than-life spy films (Ek Tha Tiger, Pathaan), Raazi is grounded in realism. It portrays espionage as a game of patience, intelligence, and risk rather than just action sequences.

3.Powerful Supporting Cast

•Vicky Kaushal (Iqbal Syed) delivers a subtle yet memorable performance, making the audience sympathize with his character.
• Jaideep Ahlawat (Sehmat’s mentor) is another standout, portraying a tough yet caring intelligence officer.

 4. Emotional Depth & Realism

One of Raazi’s biggest strengths is how it humanizes both sides of the war. The film shows that patriotism isn’t just about hate—it’s about sacrifice. It doesn’t portray Pakistan as an evil entity but rather as a nation with its own people, families, and soldiers.
